REPORT: According to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department in 2022 forty-five percent of youths in Texas prisons were on suicide watch.

During the last two decades, state audits, investigations and lawsuits have pointed to youth in detention centers facing sexual, physical and mental abuse. Texas State House Rep. (D) James Talarico announced he is filing a bill to close down the last standing five youth prisons in the state, he says instead of funding youth prisons the state should allocate those 300 million dollars towards county led rehabilitation programs. Report first aired in March 2023.
